Mold isn't always easy to identify. While some growth appears as visible discoloration on walls or ceilings, other mold problems develop behind drywall, underneath flooring, or inside areas affected by moisture.

Recognizing warning signs early can help prevent a small moisture issue from becoming a more extensive restoration project.

1. Persistent Musty Odors

A musty smell is one of the most common signs of a possible mold problem.

If an area continues to smell damp even after cleaning, moisture may be trapped inside building materials.

2. Visible Mold Growth

Mold can appear as black, green, white, or other colored patches.

Common locations include bathrooms, laundry rooms, areas beneath sinks, and surfaces near previous leaks. Color alone cannot reliably identify the type of mold or determine how hazardous it may be.

3. Previous Water Damage

Homes that have experienced flooding, plumbing leaks, or roof damage may develop mold if affected materials were not adequately dried.

The EPA recommends drying wet materials within approximately 24 to 48 hours to help prevent mold growth. (Source: U.S. EPA)

4. Peeling Paint or Warped Materials

Bubbling paint, swollen baseboards, warped flooring, and stained drywall may indicate excessive moisture.

These conditions don't automatically confirm mold, but they warrant further investigation. See also our article on hidden signs of water damage.

5. Recurring Moisture Problems

If mold keeps returning after cleaning, the underlying moisture source may still be present.

Professional remediation focuses on addressing the contamination and correcting the conditions that allowed mold to develop.

What Does Professional Mold Remediation Involve?

Depending on the extent of contamination, remediation may include identifying moisture sources, containing affected areas, removing materials that cannot be adequately cleaned, cleaning salvageable surfaces, and verifying that the moisture problem has been corrected.

Simply painting over mold or applying a surface treatment does not resolve an underlying moisture issue.
